Orewa Beach Surf Guide

Orewa Beach in Auckland East Coast is a quite exposed beach break that only works when conditions are just right. Spring and Summer provide the favoured conditions. Ideal winds are from the west. Tends to receive distant groundswells and the best swell direction is from the northeast. The beach break provides left and right handers. Best around mid tide when the tide is rising. Unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up.

Orewa Beach Surf Forecast and Surf Reports (Auckland, New Zealand) (30)

    Shaggy from New Zealand

“The wave is quite fat at all tides and only gets really good on a tropical cyclone although the odd ground swell pushes in there. there is a good little sand bar at the rivermouth that gives good long rides for longboards and short boards the etiquette here isnt very good and there a lots of beginner/intermediates out there who like to drop in but if your a vocal dude they will stay off your wave longboarders and sups tend to wave hog but sups get dropped in on left right and centre just like any other beach so if your a sup i would reccomend steering clear of the bar and finding a another bank along the beach the bar paddle out is quite long but the waves are fairly soft so shouldnt be a problem for most surfers if you cant make the drive up to futher spots like tawharanui or mangawhai this place is a good compromise
despite how the site says summer and spring are the best times its actually better during cyclone season from march to the end of autumn and winter”

What tide level is best for surfing? ›

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. Now, how this affects surfing?… Well, every break has it's favored tides, which is mainly due to the bathymetry of that specific break. However, usually most spots favor a 'low going high' or when the tide is on the rise, 'filling in'. This is the believed “tidal push” which may help the forward momentum of waves.

But generally for surfing, you want light offshore winds under 15mph for clean, groomed waves. Anything more than that (say, a gusty offshore wind over 25mph) will make it harder to paddle into waves and, on weaker swells, harder to generate speed on the waves.

What's a good wave height for surfing? ›

Generally speaking the perfect size for beginners is 1 to 2ft. For intermediates: 2-4ft waves are best as it gives you more face of the wave to progress your skills on. You should keep an eye on the 'Swell Period', because it's a lot more indicative of the actual wave size (see the next point).
